The Elixir Year: Month 8 Review

The original title of this post was going to be "The Elixir Year: An Early End", detailing my abandonment of the syllabus and formal learning plan. As it stands, I'm hopping off the guardrails and winging things a bit.

When I initially posted my year-long syllabus, two people responded with similar takes: "It feels like a year is a long time" & "1 year is a long time to commit to a roadmap - you're bound to learn things in the first month (not to mention 6) that will change the roadmap". They were both right. After ~6 months, I "learned" Elixir. It didn't take that long to be proficient and understand why it's so well beloved. I built data processing tools, a realtime web app, and met most of my learning goals. All the remaining books, courses, and content on the syllabus are now supplemental.

Like drawing the bowstring back before taking a shot, I've spent the past month putting together a plan for a capstone project. The details will emerge later, but for now I'm exploring ideas, prototyping in python, and working towards something I want to bring into existence. With two weeks remaining until my batch begins at the Recurse Center, now is a good time to make a plan.
